LEGO and Nintendo lift the lid on Super Mario
Posted by Huw,
Here's the press release:
The LEGO Super Mario Starter Course and the first of a range of LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets now revealed, underpinning the new physical play experience that brings Super Mario to life in the world of LEGO bricks.
BILLUND, April 7, 2020: The LEGO Group today announced pre-order availability of the 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course. Fans can now secure their own set of this upcoming and highly anticipated new product line, the result of a unique partnership with Nintendo.
The new LEGO Super Mario product line features an interactive LEGO Mario figure that collects coins in real-life game levels created with LEGO bricks. Neither a video game nor a traditional LEGO brick-based set, it promises to change the way people interact with Super Mario in the physical world and engage in LEGO experiences.
Disclosed for the first time today by LEGO Design Lead Jonathan Bennink, fans will be able to begin exploring the fun-packed LEGO Super Mario universe with the Adventures with Mario Starter Course. This entry point set to the world of LEGO Super Mario is needed to unlock expansion sets and features seven action bricks for different interactions with the LEGO Mario figure that are only included in this set.
The LEGO Mario figure itself has LCD screens in his eyes, mouth and belly to display a wide variety of instant reactions to movement, colour and action bricks. Also included is a speaker that plays iconic sounds and music from the video game series.
“Super Mario has continued to appear, always in a form adapted to the current hardware of the time.” said Takashi Tezuka, Executive Officer and Game Producer of Nintendo Co., Ltd. “I am thankful that in this project with the LEGO Group, Mario is jumping out of the digital world of game consoles and smart devices, and we are able to bring him into the world with a new, physical type of Mario play. It's very exciting to think of LEGO Mario becoming a real friend to children and to picture them playing in their very own Mario world that they imagined themselves.”
Kids aged 6+ can build levels and play their own way, with action-packed challenges having lots of creative fun in a highly interactive experience. LEGO Mario is used to collect virtual coins as he runs and jumps from the Start Pipe to the Goal Pole via LEGO bricks, cloud platform, and clashes with the Goomba figure and Bowser Jr. figure.
The Starter Course can be combined with LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets, which each unlock unique challenges and characters to play with and against friends. The first Expansion Sets, also revealed today, include the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set. And because the products all include modular builds, fans are fully in charge of creating exactly the LEGO level course they want to see Mario come to life in.
Fans will also love the free LEGO Super Mario app by the LEGO Group, a supporting feature to further enhance the physical play experience. It keeps track of scores to encourage continuous rebuilding, as well as it provides digital building instructions with zoom and rotate viewing tools to make building easier, suggests other creative ways to build and play, and is a safe forum to share ideas with friends.
The update was shared in a video posted by the LEGO Group and Nintendo earlier today and on the LEGO Super Mario website at www.LEGO.com/SuperMario.
“We were thrilled to see the global reaction to news of LEGO Super Mario,” said Jonathan Bennink, Digital Design Lead on LEGO Super Mario, the LEGO Group. “Fans have been keen to learn more, so I am pleased that today we were able to reveal more details about this exciting new collaboration that has led to a re-imagination of the LEGO building experience and an entirely new way to play inspired by the beloved video game icon, Super Mario. We can’t wait to see fans get creative and challenge each other with this highly engaging and social play experience.”
The full LEGO Super Mario assortment will launch Aug. 1st 2020, but fans can now pre-order the LEGO Super Mario Adventures with Mario Starter Course at LEGO.com and from select leading retailers around the world.
The recommended retail price for the Starter Course is 59.99 EUR/USD, while the recommended retail price for the two expansion sets will be 29.99 USD/EUR for the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and 99.99 USD/EUR for the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set.

Unngghhhhj. This sounds like we’re being told there aren’t minifig sets coming at all...
^ Wasn't that pretty clear from the beginning? I wasn't expecting any minifig sets to be announced or planned.
I'm personally extremely excited, but I can see why many adults are not
Also look at the bottom of the last image, a 3x3 circular tile?
Another expansion pack can be seen in the gallery on LEGO.com’s listing of the starter set. :)
That bowser looks cool, but not for €100.
Still hoping for minifigs/big figs in the future.
These sets w ill surely appeal to a younger audience for play.
Less for adults and display.
My 2 cents....
Well, it looks like there will be plenty of cool, new pieces. So that's surely something.
I do live in hope of actual Mario minifigs. I want a little Yoshi, darn it.
ooohhh, I'm eyeing up those roller coaster tracks in green, probably a 30$ set though.
Gee Lego, Pretty cost prohibitive to make this worthwhile at a reasonable scale.
It's pretty clear we won't be getting minifigures in this wave, but that doesn't mean we won't get minifigures in the future.
Look at Minecraft. We got the Ideas Micro World in June 2012 and then 3 more micro worlds in 2013/2014. It wasn't until November 2014 - over 2 years after the release of that first set - that we got a minifigure scale set.
LEGO knows the demand for Mario minifigures and I really doubt they'd skip on the opportunity to make them. Be patient: LEGO Mario is here for the long haul and we will get minifigures eventually.
I still don't see the appeal. All you have to do is hit certain spots with your Mario figurine, right? Where is the challenge in that? It doesn't matter how you build the level, because you can put the figurine everywhere you want.
Another product where you need an app to get the maximum out of your set, no doubt the app will only work on more expensive newer phones like the controller for the vehicles. I love Lego as it reduces screen time but more and more that isn't the case, but as a middle-aged man I'm not the target age group for this.
Well... that last picture sure looked interesting, but for me the rest didn´t look really convincing. The Starter Set is kinda expensive compared with the play value of its content (in my opinion), so I wonder if this would be appealing to kids.
Why do people keep commenting on minifigs? They were never coming. I’m definitely interested to play it with my kids. Plus, I see multiple new pieces that hopefully will transition out of this set. Those 4x4 plates with rounded corners. The 2x4 tile with round ends!
The expansion set GWP is certainly going to inflate initial sales as people fear missing it...
How much licensed themes is too much?
When are we going to get something original?
Interesting experiment. I’m sure children will be very attracted to it - similarly to how Minecraft branding turned a basic product into something new.
The real value will be in making custom courses, so here’s hoping (for the family’s wallets sake) that components which typically repeat in the video games are eventually sold at a lower price.
I mean, we all know how many Koopas are in a typical level...
I think LEGO will start producing minifigures once they see the public demand for them.
Above all, though, we'll have to see how these sell. I'm not sure how popular these sets will be with actual kids.
It's not for me, but then I never played Super Mario (in any form, as far as I remember)
There are most certainly elements used in all three sets that I absolutely want for my own purposes. Good thing the pieces I covet most are in the cheaper expansion set. Maybe I’ll grab 2.
As I saw someone else say, its easier for Lego to try something completely new, and them make standard minifig sets after, than it is to make standard minifig sets and then turn round and say 'lets try something new'
I really hope Target is one of the "select retailers", as these look like they will be pretty good buys at 70% off.
I don't find this particularly interesting mostly because of how specific the sets are, what am I supposed to do with them other than making Mario courses? with Hidden Side sets you lose out on the AR functionality if you build something else with them which is okay because the fun wears out after a while anyway but with these they're either basic parts or Mario themed parts, I hope they make actual Mario sets with minifigures later as I don't find this particularly appealing.
I know you lose out on the physical aspect of it but you're better off just getting Mario Maker 2 on Switch if you want to build courses, this physical translation is fun but it'll get boring after a while and then you're stuck with blocky Mario and some blocky Mario enemies to either toss in the "I don't know what to do with these" bin or at best display on a shelf doing nothing.
You're telling me this garbage is going to sell better than a classics line? Lego is making it so easy for me to save money.
Interesting and I'm getting it lol.
Definitely buying it from LEGO as they have the best deal
This will be popular with a lot of children and some adults. The parts they have, LEGO is introducing the fan base to lots of parts.
I try and find the positive in most Lego themes, but I really don’t see the appeal in these sets. I don’t know if I’m in the minority but these just look boring. As mentioned above, with the hidden side sets at least they had relatively cool builds and minifigures.
Apart from the odd new piece, these just lack in a lot of ways. Very disappointing.
Would have been a lot more excited had they have just brought out a new original theme like a pirates or castle theme.
It looks like an interesting idea, and with an expansion set included with pre-orders, that's really not a bad price.
I've put my money down, as it is worth taking a look at. Whether I end up getting any more expansion sets remains to be seen.
Holy cow! Am I correct in spotting tan "Black Wedge 2 x 1 with Stud Notch Left/Right" ? I thought that day would never come!
Sorry, this was just my personal frustration.
In the video on LEGO’s YouTube channel, the LEGO designer said they have been working on this idea with Nintendo for 4 years!

There is no challenge in any lego set, it's about imagination
Disappointed. Too expensive and no minifig sets.
Hope this changes later.
I see a 'Boo' YAY!!
Yeah, I will rather order those cool platform pieces later than buy overpriced sets
I'm getting sick of people whining about "no minifigures". Cmon. LEGO NINTENDO? That brings up so many possibilities!
That Bowser figure is actually really cool looking to me. The Bowsers Castle Stage is actually pretty cool. But I’ll pass on these as I’ll most likely be snagging all of the DC summer sets
We wait decades for a Nintendo license and this is what they come up with? A pathetic gimmick that will keep kids occupied for all of thirty seconds? Collector’s, like myself, will pay huge amounts of cash for official Mario minifigures. Game mechanics in Lego don’t work, just look at the board game range they had that died instantly. More shelfwarmers right here. Just add this to the long list of epic fails in 2020. Perhaps 2021 will give us ACTUAL Lego sets.
It’s certainly not my cup of tea, but the bowsers castle build looks great. So that might be a pick up on clearance sort of thing or double VIP which these no doubt will probably get pushed to. I think my nephew when he’s a little older though would absolutely adore these sets. They look perfect for the target age group.
I don't see the appeal in this line. Other than the fact that it's based on a popular brand, what's the appeal in this line? It's overly gimmicky and all the electric components will be completely useless as soon as the app used for then will retire.
Buying those sets will definitely not be a good purchase in long-term.
Why spend 70$ on a LEGO set that is supposed to emulate a game when you can buy the actual game it's based off for much cheaper?
I don't understand why they wouldn't use the model of minecraft, which is a huge hit for them, to make this theme?
I wonder how much effort it would take nowadays to not know who Super Mario is. I mean, you can't escape him! He's the god of red hats and moustaches, if there ever was one.

There is a rumored CMF series...
The brick-built Bowser, Yoshi and Dry Bones look great. I'm not enamored with the blob Mario though. I see the appeal of these for kids but think it's overpriced thanks to the electronic components. I am definitely hoping for minifigures at some point.
Oh wow these prices are actually lower than I was expecting. This is great news!
Being a life-long Mario fan ( I still play Super Mario Bros. when I not adulting), I was super excited to hear this theme was coming down the line. I can see the appeal this will have with the children and young teens, but it's definitely not what I was expecting. I really think LEGO and Nintendo missed the mark on this theme. If they designed these sets in minifig scale, they would appeal to a much wider audience. I'm wondering if they considered the large population of now adults that grew up playing Mario games and the nostalgia a minifig scale set would have. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. I still might get the starter set, but not on pre-order.
I feel like gimmicks is something Lego should have left behind in the early 2000s. Would love to see a whole bunch of Nintendo properties in system form
I mean, I like the idea still, but seeing this is all we’re getting it’s too expensive for the gimmick. Just buy a copy of Mario Maker. You can play that with friends and get the experience of building stuff too. Sure it’s not a physical toy, but it seems to fill this niche.
I wish they threw some mini figures in the expansion sets so there was more to play with. They just seem... empty without Mario. Heck, why wasn’t Luigi a figure in one of the sets? That would be great for playing with others.
I appreciate the effort, but now I feel like this was a better idea on paper. Still, I’ll be holding out for traditional sets. With these builds though, it feels like everything here looks good! Kinda odd the worst looking part of it is Mario itself. I will admit the figure is... cute, but probably will be tricky to use in mocs.
The Pirahna Plant has absolutely no interest to me.
The Stater Pack comes with a lot more than I thought it would, still not $60 worth but still. The fact that the preorder comes with a free gift is starting to make it much more tempting.
Bowser's Castle is amazing! I absolutely love it! There's a lot of expensive sets coming this summer so I'll have to wait and see where I'll put it on my wanted list but right now it's got massive draw.
After the initial shock of seeing that massive monstrosity of a creepy Mario figure, I actually kinda want to get my hands on it now to make a sinister stop-motion horror movie featuring it as a serial killer stalking regular minifigures...
This doesn't deserve the Nintendo Seal of Quality.

That's the Monty Mole set you get as a GWP for pre- ordering.
Obviously most AFOLs and Nintendo fans on here are disappointed or confused but it's bound to happen when it's a play feature first and not a collectible. Get over it. At least there's new parts for AFOLs. Sure you can cheat but so can you on most games. Cheating is not the point, using imaginative play is. This is something adults lose sight of as they get older and turn into Mr. Business himself.
My household personally, my boys are puzzled but excited to play with something like this.
@LegoSonicBoy:
No, the early speculation was that about half the sets would be part of this game system, while the other half had low enough price/piece ratios that they would probably not involve the game. Of course, the best ratio was the $100 set, which we now can assume is Bowser's Castle. It's part of the game system, but it doesn't appear to involve any expensive electronic pieces, and a fairly low ratio of new elements (I can positively ID 23 of the new pads, one small turtle shell, one large turtle shell, a pair of 3x3 round tiles, and one sewer pipe, from a set that we believe will contain 1010pcs).
@Spike730:
It doesn't matter _if_ you build the level. There are tiles with some sort of code printed on them. All you have to do is tap Mario on each tile, and he registers a specific action. All you have to do is line those tiles up on a baseplate and tap away, and you can "beat" the game without any real challenge. If that's all you care about. I expect we'll see speed run videos using the sets in their proper configuration posted at some point. If you do it on video, nobody can claim you cheated by just lining up the code tiles.
@andyh1984:
Who said anything about an app? The "app" is coded into the Mario figure. Feed it batteries, and it should be functional for a long time.
@evrtstudio:
Because people really want minifigs? Seeing this doesn't make people want them less. It just reminds them that they're not getting them, like poking a fresh wound.
@Nesquik:
And somebody with deep pockets will almost certainly try to recreate an entire level using these components, which will be insanely expensive.
I completely expect minifig sets. Were they announced? No. But why -woulnd't- they? They have the license, they should exploit it. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see an entire Mario (if not more general Nintendo) CMF series. Incidentally, that'd be the first CMF series I'd ever buy.
I firmly believe this is the opening salvo in a soon to be flood.
It's just ugly... Lego is again on the wrong track, sadly...
I'm waiting for when sets with minifigures come out and then the entire comment section will be "looks like they finally listened to us fans" and "finally something better than the trash they started out with"
The pre-order link gives an error now. Maybe sold out already?
I may look at a few of the packs for the parts, but that Mario still horrifies me
I doubt it sold out. LEGO isn’t great at the whole website thing. I’m waiting for it to come up. You can still preorder the Razor Crest, I’m sure demand isn’t that much higher for this. Plus, they can beg initial production to preorders. So there’s no incentive to have a cutoff.
That's a no from me. Never been a fan of Super Mario anyway, but no.
I like to have more bricks for my buck, and this looks a bit sparse. The tech seems a little basic too. I understand it has to appeal across the ages, but I'm not sure that it will.
Well, I'm even more impressed by these than I was by the initial reveal! Both Bowser and the big Bowser statue behind him are beautifully brick-built and beefy. And Boo and Dry Bones were near the top of my list of other enemies I'd love to see.
Waiting for minifigure sets, LEGO.
Wish there was minifigures/Yoshi but I am happy for LEGO doing something unique

So, there are pictures of the box for the starter kit and it clearly says “smart device REQUIRED but not included” (emphasis mine).....

It doesn't look like Yoshi is included in the Starter Pack. Presumably the one from the earlier video comes in one of the other sets.
LEGO is basically sabotaging the theme by making Mario exclusive to the starter set. If I were to spend 59.99USD on buildable Mario I would rather buy Super Mario maker 2 and have unlimited level creation resources forever then spending that money on one set and then have to buy more to make new levels. They should've just made a set that contains only Mario and then start selling the other sets. I hope the kids will like it because I really like the idea of LEGO Nintendo products.
Hope they release the invisible floating bricks with bonusses as mini pack.
The starter set isn’t bad, but I’ll wait. Looks like no regular sets for a while :(
Another fins job by TLG.............. no longer able to pre-order!!

Did you get a confirmation from them? I've sent an email to store support.
So I didn't actually see that this was announced that it was available to order today until now and I guess pre-orders are sold out as it's not available on Shop @ Home with the free gift anymore. Super bummed. :-(
Just had a lovely chat with Smantha at Lego. They sold out of PRE (as in before, prior to or preceding) orders. Not sure they have mastered the point of pre-orders let alone releases themselves.......... I live in NY and it is the little things that is getting us through these times and they just REALLY let my kids down. I'm sure Amazon will save the day as usual but I'm not gonna lie for the amount I spend at Lego I sure do feel unappreciated.

From the images shown I know it’s a koopa Troopa that was shown but in another set. Time will tell on Yoshi if he’s in the starter set or not
They now have this message on the Starter page:
"Due to your overwhelming excitement for LEGO® Super Mario™, we are no longer taking pre-orders at this time. Please check back soon!"
So that answers that.
"Neither a video game nor a traditional LEGO brick-based set" is why no one wants this. It's not a LEGO Super Mario crossover video game with tie-in sets, nor is it a traditional LEGO line faithfully based on the Mario series. It's some weird, expensive inbreeding of both those concepts that doesn't understand what makes either enjoyable. Wake me up when they release traditional LEGO sets with real minifigs.

I want this. A lot of other people in this thread want this. And a lot of other people seem to want this—enough to sell out of the initial preorder stock set aside, from the looks of it.
Stop saying "nobody wants this" when what you really mean is "I don't want this".
Well I was wrong about it being sold out but right about LEGO continuing to fail at this whole e-commerce thing. What an absolutely frustrating absurd situation to not be able to accommodate preorders for something you’re trying to get your customers excited for.
So the point of being a VIP when you don't get a heads up for things like this is what? Seems they've stop giving notification. Then they double down on stupid with things like this. Never really had a chance to pre-order because it was down-ish. Just said coming soon and then "Oh so sorry, we're stupid, no more pre-orders".
I'm waiting for the Great Giana Sisters sets from L***n ;)
The pre-order is sold out already? So I can't even get one day to decide if I want this? Looks like, once again, they don't want my money.
I am interested to discover what the theme has to offer. My family love Mario and Lego so we will definitely try this theme. I pre-ordered yesterday but the free expansion pack is showing as - waiting for new stock - so may be I missed out on this already! It would be disappointing since the order went through with the promotional set....
Needs more Princess Daisy.
There are many comments about not wanting this. Although it wouldn't be my first choice of design, I ordered it immediately. Why? Because of my 7 and 4 year old boys who already use their Duplo sets and Pokemon action figures to create "Mario" levels after we are done playing Mario Maker 2 together. Their levels make absolutely no sense, but I love their imagination in translating what they see on screen to their toys. These sets will give them more to work with while also appealing to my nostalgia for all things Mario. I'm excited to see what they come up with!

Sounds like something imaginative, that might as well be included :-S
(I know some people have been saying basically the same thing here, but I just really want to say this)
I'm sick and tired of peole constantly whining about "no minifigs", how expensive it is, and how it's "just a useless gimmick". While I do agree the price on the STARTER COURSE is high (likely because it is the only set apart from the castle to have Mario in it, who I'm 99% sure costs LEGO more than most things they make), the rest of the range seems to have pretty good prices for what you're getting. I can't really comment on the minifig part (I'm much more interested in actual builds), I agree we will probably see some, if not in this wave, then in the future. As for the gimmick part, from personal experience, I can say it will keep kids entertained for more than "30 seconds".
I also see some people talking about "how much collectors would pay if they made minifigs". Collectors are not the primary audience of LEGO. Kids are. No, a kid is not able to buy 60-200 Euro sets, their parents can. As a final note, I actually really like the concept of these sets (as if that wasn't obvious already.) I am already prepared for all the hate this will get.
I'm glad I did preorder it now! I'm looking forward to this on the day we get it! Although my partner is now saying she wants her own one!
How is a pre-order "SOLD OUT"? Help me make it make sense...

Given the long timespan for the production of Lego sets, and Lego's packed production schedule that has to be determined months in advance, Lego would likely have had to set aside a predetermined number of sets not already ordered by other retailers to have available for preorders. If Lego were to exceed that, what would essentially happen would be the preorders themselves becoming backordered—leaving some of those who preordered under the assumption that it would guarantee them the sets upon release waiting weeks or even months for additional stock to become available, even as those same sets became available for immediate purchase at other physical and online retailers.

This character is terrible, I enjoyed the 75256 kylo ren's shuttle set though, who doesn't love that sith trooper design?
